California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act

On January 1, 2024, wine containers sold in (or shipped to) California will be subject to a CRV (California Redemption Value) fee as per the California Beverage Container Recycling and Litter Reduction Act (also known as the “Bottle Bill”).

Wine Software has updated its sales platforms to allow configuration of automatic CRV fee calculations. The automatic calculation will add a CRV fee for qualified sales to your sales receipts at the point-of-sale and Back Office.

This new feature is available now. You will need to update your Wine Software (point-of-sale and Back Office) per the instructions below..

CRV Fee collection schedule:

Activating Automatic CRV in Wine Software

Update your Wine Software

Steps:

  1. iPad point-of-sale should auto-update. You can check your version by tapping MENU | About this App from the iPad sales screen. It should read “Version 4.2.23, API: 4.2.9” or later.

  2. Windows point-of-sale - Select the update link (in red) from the Cashier Login Screen (if present) and/or check the version from the Cashier Login screen. It should read “Version 4.2.43“ or later.

  3. Back Office system - Select the update link (in red) from the Login Screen (if present) and/or check the version from the About link in the lower left of the menu screen. It should read “BO Ver 4.2.42” or later.

Review Your Items!  <-- important!!

If you have active tasting fees or wine by glass in your wine item group that are set to ‘Inventoried’, they will incur a CRV fee. There may be other examples of items in your wine group that should not incur a CRV fee. It will be important to review your item list to avoid charging a CRV fee on items that do not qualify for CRV.

Using the General Inventory List report from the Inventory Control menu, set the Group filter to Wine (and select any other group that carries alcohol such as Beer or Spirits), then set Active = ‘Yes’. Print the report.

If there are items in the list that should NOT receive a CRV fee, you will need to make sure they are either non-inventoried (the ‘Inv’ column shows inventoried status), or move them to a non-Wine group, or make them inactive.

Note: Bottles consumed on-premise are NOT subject to CRV fees, however, at this time, there is no specific tracking of on-premise consumption and therefore CRV fees WILL be applied even if the bottle is consumed on-premise.

Reporting CRV Activity

If you are a Winery in California, or a Winery who ships to California:

Collection of CRV is optional, however, you will be expected to register your winery with CalRecyle and pay CRV Processing Fees for qualified CRV items sold within or to California. This includes wineries outside of California who ship to California.

A new report has been added to Back Office showing activity of containers subjected to CRV fees. Simply go to the Point of Sale menu and choose CRV Report under the Activities menu.

Note: The CRV Report link will only appear when Automatic CRV Calculations are activated.
